Many fish reared in aquaculture continue to suffer greatly, and fish welfare challenging issues include diseases, crowding, improper handling and transportation, poor slaughter methods, poor water quality, and the inability to display natural behavior. As the result of this, in most aquaculture farms, fish are exposed to constant stress and mortality rates are high. This suffering is unacceptable, because fish are sentient beings capable of feeling pain like other animals. Unfortunately, there is limited awareness programs, research work and legal requirement directed on farmed fish welfare. Farmed fish deserve a worth living, EAPAT achieve this by promoting humane rearing awareness and research, providing appropriate transport awareness and research, carrying out research and awareness on slaughter methods that minimize suffering, and providing awareness on legal legislation to specifically protect the welfare of farmed fish.
