The population of chickens in Tanzania currently stands at 83,280,000 comprising of 38,770,000 indigenous chicken and 44,510,000 exotic chickens (Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, 2020). This huge increase in production system reduces the freedom of birds as their movement is restricted and welfare is compromised. Birds particularly hens are abused through cage farming that limits their ability to practice natural behaviors like nesting, exercising and dust bathing, this leads to high levels of stress and frustration. By recognizing this welfare challenge, EAPAT promotes poultry welfare by preventing cruelty to hens through cage free campaign, promoting poultry welfare education in communities and schools, and carrying out research and policy influence on poultry welfare.
